FLEET (Hampshire, UK) – December 2005 – The CONTENTENGINEER Group is helping investigators piece together valuable evidence, with rapid onsite computer forensic services for those victims of computer and information based crime. Their mobile forensic data collection “laboratory” enables their technical experts in electronic data storage to visit Client sites, preserve evidence and extract valuable leads in the fight against crime. “The increased miniaturisation of computers and storage devices means that they are becoming ever more common evidence in both criminal investigations and civil litigation matters,” commented Rob Shrubsall, Founder and Chief Technical Expert at the Firm.

“We are finding that data held on computer hard disks, mobile phones, personal digital assistants, USB memory sticks, flash memory cards, smart and SIM cards provide valuable evidence for accelerating investigations.” The Firm can assist investigators looking into both criminal and civil matters. “Criminal activities include forgery, harassment, theft, assault and more serious matters,” said Mr Shrubsall in a recent interview, “There are many organisations that are being affected by data and computer related crime. Including digital fraud, inappropriate data duplication [copying], employee disloyalty, theft of intellectual property [software, designs, documents and customer lists], external system attacks [hacking] as well as the more widely publicised actions of internet and email abuse.”

The Firm’s primary goal is to assist in the identification of potential victims from evidence trails, and then support investigators in building a robust picture of what happened. “The placement of computers or microprocessors in everyday objects results in vast quantities of data being available,” explained Mr Shrubsall.

The equipment in the mobile laboratory consists of advanced software and specialist hardware components that enable the Firm’s technical experts to collect, examine and investigate electronic based evidence at the scene of crime, often on the Client premises. The mobile laboratory can also be carried by a single technical expert for covert operations – for example when Clients suspect disloyal employees, sub-contractors or computer users. “The Firm’s ability to respond rapidly to Clients concerns is a key feature of this service. Computers and devices no longer have to be taken offsite, especially in covert matters where it is not appropriate to raise awareness of an ongoing investigation,” commented Mr Shrubsall, explaining some of the other benefits.
