Data Recovery

CONTENTENGINEER : Data Recovery Services provide honest and expert advice on protecting valuable digital assets; as well as offering managed incident response for recovery of data and artefacts from the widest range of systems, media and devices. The Services have developed in response to the explosion in information held on an ever expanding range of media and devices.

The proliferation of both silicon and magnetic based storage components within business and everyday products has resulted in the widest distribution of data. The ease of copying data results in a dilution of copyright material, patents and other valuable intellectual property. The increase in statute, regulation and best practice heaped on organisations by law makers, public bodies and industry watchdogs has resulted in organisation having to carefully manage both the retention and deletion of data through its lifecycle.

Service Benefits

  • Totally effective incident management procedures and process
  • Protection of organisations intellectual property and corporate assets
  • Minimisation of loss of business critical data from impacting on profits or brand
  • Enabling of compliance with statute and regulation (and best practice)
  • Rapid identification of potential risks to the organisation

Engagements

Clients engage the Group in forensic data recovery projects that encompass prevention and cure. The latter type of engagement, provides a managed incident response to assist Clients in recovering data and artefacts from systems, media and devices. Whether the loss of data was accidental, deliberate or as a result of software error or associated physical failure; the Group can often recover either total files, or sufficient partial elements of files to enable successful re-assembly. The group does not offer a general data salvage service.

But prevention is often better than cure, and the Group therefore assists Clients in pro-actively addressing the need for effective protection of data with fully automated solutions that enable the recovery of data in the event of a wide range of human or technology or environment related errors. By adopting a "What if?" scenario approach, the Group can assist a Client in identifying potential risks including:

  • Physical location of datacentre(s), near to potential hazards
  • Localised physical damage to racks or office based equipment
  • Theft of portable devices laptops, PDAs, mobile phones, credit card terminals
  • Theft of fixed devices including servers, desktops, networking equipment
  • Environmental failure within the datacentre (flooding, gas leak, fire, electricity failure, UPS failure, air conditioning failure, generator failure)
  • Internal administrative and external hacking attacks

Identify Known Risks

In identifying ALL known risks (and facilitating lists of others incomprehendable but possible risks), the Group enables Clients to detail a [disaster] recovery plan and select appropriate technologies to enable business continuity. In conjunction with the Group's Technology Advisory Services solutions can then be acquired that meet financial, operational (process/procedure) and recovery needs in totality.

Recovery Paradigms

The Group has the appropriate software and specialised technology that enable recovery of data from the broadest range of system, media and devices. The GRID provides an interesting list of locations of data in today's information age. In particular the Group can attempt recover electronic data from embedded hard disk drives (3.5", 2.5", 1.8", 0.85"), floppy disk drives, secure digital (SD), xD picture cards, memory sticks (including DUO and PRO), CD, DVD, multi-media cards (MMC), USB memory sticks, compact flash devices including microdrives, smart media, smart cards (depending on encryption), SIM cards, RFID tags and standard/2D barcodes.

PLEASE NOTE that the recovery of data depends entirely on securing the system, media or device in a timely manner and ensuring that no further I/O writes are made to the device, including "destructive" surface formatting. If the device is damaged such that it cannot be fully accessed or controlled electronically, then complete forensic recovery may not be possible.

Data Recovery Guide

The Group has recognised that basic data recovery and also forensic evidence collection/search are well defined processes and therefore has streamlined the process for engaging Expert(s) in such matters. The Guide and an Order Form can be downloaded from the resources section or obtained from the office. This form details all the information required to commence such an engagement, ensuring a rapid return of valuable digital assets to the Client in the majority of cases.

Media Wipe Services

For when you absolutely, positively do not want data to be recovered.

Related Services

The Group also undertakes Computer Forensic Services for criminal and civil matters including litigation; plus associated Expert Witness Services. If the recovery relates to legal matters the engagement process can involve additional necessary forensic steps.
