Data Recovery from Other Evidence
Identify the Potential Evidence
CONTENTENGINEER® has been asked to recover data from a broad range of
evidence, not all that would normally be considered as "electronic data storage". The Group
has used forensically sound techniques to recover data and/or information from
evidence that includes:
| | |
 2D Barcode
Often used in logistics or supply chain tracking, containing unique reference
numbers for futher investigation. |
 Electrically Erasable PROM
An essential component of any computer based system
or device. Will hold basic but valuable configuration information. |
 Radio Frequency ID
Whether injected in animals, on retail packaging or hidden on expensive products, unique
RFID tags hold valuable identification data. |
 Printed Paper
Whilst computers have generally reduced the amount of "paperwork", they are still
responsible for printing hugh volumes of data; all valuable in an investigation
particularly with scanning/analysis techniques. |
 Printed Photographs
The advent of digital cameras has seen a flood of colour printers on the market -
inkjet, laser, dye transfer. All have particular characteristics. Also digital
watermarks make it easy to detect copyright theft issues. |
 Contactless Security
Often containing printed reference material but also smart card, RFID and magnetic
card technologies, are useful in security type investigations. |
Next Steps
The next stages in the recovery of data from other components may require
specialist equipment or tools. The Group has a broad range of investigatory techniques and
supportive hardware/software that can be used in the recovery of data. In the first instance
it is essential to contact the Group to discuss the
ultimate need for the data that is recovered, to ensure that the most cost-effective and
forensically sound procedures are adopted for its recovery.
